Understanding the Somali Alphabet
🌟 Welcome to Somali!
The Somali alphabet uses the Latin script and has 26 letters: 5 vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and 21 consonants. What makes Somali unique is that vowels can be short or long, and this changes the meaning of words completely! For example, "hoyo" (stay) vs "hooyo" (mother) - the extra "o" changes everything.

🎯 Why Vowel Length Matters
In Somali, the length of a vowel completely changes the meaning of a word. Long vowels are written as double letters (aa, ee, ii, oo, uu) and are held longer when you pronounce them. This is one of the most important features to master!

Long II

Short O

Special Consonant Sounds
Four Unique Sounds to Learn:
  • X - A throat sound similar to the "ch" in Scottish "loch" (xaax = chalk)
  • C - Pronounced like the "a" in "father" but deeper in the throat (caano = milk)
  • KH - Similar to X but softer (khayr = good)
  • Q - A deep "k" sound from the back of the throat (qorax = sun)
Two-Letter Sounds:
  • SH - Like "sh" in "shop" (shaah = tea)
  • DH - Like "th" in "this" (dhagax = stone)
Note: SH and DH count as single sounds, even though they're written with two letters!
